Neurological Disorders
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is unique to any other therapy used for brain injuries and neurological conditions: It is the only therapy known that can significantly raise the oxygen content in the brain and cause an adaptation for repair and quicker recovery. The results of using HBOT adjunctively with have been extremely positive and now the research is in, showing us the value of applying repetitive HBOT.

We have categorized neurological disorders into 3 major areas, all of which have shown great promise with the application of HBOT: Neurodevelopment disorders, neurological disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders.
Neurodevelopment disorders:
Cerebral Palsy / Developmental Delay / Autism / Fetal Alcohol SyndromeThese are childhood conditions where the brain needs to develop above and beyond the normal growth seen in children. The cause may be genetic (like mitochondrial disorder), environmental (like alcohol), or physiological (like Cerebral Palsy). If a diagnosis of one of these or other neurodevelopment disorders has been made, then it means that already the child is at a growth disadvantage. Now, the child not only has to make up for this, but still has to grow normally (i.e., from 3 to 4 years of age). Normal growth becomes very tough when these individuals still need to make up for previous delays. This puts the child at a great disadvantage and by the time he or she reaches their teens, they are even further at a disadvantage. This is why HBOT is so important, particularly in earlier life. HBOT provides extra growth factors and with proper brain exercises and neuropsychological techniques, these children can develop at a much quicker speed thus reducing the gap between them and their classmates or piers.
Neurological Injuries:
Stroke / Traumatic brain and head injuries / Anoxic Brain Injuries / Spinal cord injuriesThese are conditions where the brain has developed normally and then has had some type of trauma, whether it was physical (like a TBI) or physiological (like a stroke). Either way, the brain is now compromised. One of the most important applications has got to be immediate HBOT to help recover viable brain tissue that is minimally functioning with low oxygen content. This therapy has proven effectiveness and must be considered as a primary treatment option in conjunction with other primary treatments, like PT and OT.

Neurodegenerative disorders:
Parkinson’s disease / Alzheimer’s disease / Huntington’s chorea / Multiple sclerosisThese are conditions where again the brain has developed well, but now the challenge is a degeneration of certain brain tissue, whether from genetic, environmental, or other causes, like accelerated aging itself. Here, HBOT proves as a valuable tool to recovery due to its ability to repair damaged tissue and increase the growth of neuronal stem cells (or brain new ‘baby brain cells). This is crucial when you think of the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, which basically means degeneration of brain tissue. Clearly then, regeneration of brain tissue is of vital importance and stem cells are cells for regeneration. Recent studies document that a typical course of HBOT increases the mobilization of stem cells by up to 800%. Now that is powerful.
